TORONTO -- Cineplex Inc., one of Canada's largest entertainment and media companies, announced this week that it has "reinvented" its Playdium amusement center concept. The reimagined Playdium will open in midsize communities throughout Canada. These venues will be designed specifically for teens and their families who are looking for affordable entertainment, casual dining choices and a fun place to celebrate special occasions.

Cineplex describes the new Playdium as a "tech-infused place to play that offers the best games and attractions for everyone." Ranging between 30,000 square feet and 35,000 square feet, locations will be customized for each community and feature classic and new video and redemption games, interactive experiences, like virtual reality, and such activities as climbing walls, bowling, rope courses and two-level laser tag arenas.

"Based on the response we are seeing from the Rec Room, there is tremendous potential to create a destination designed primarily for teens, young adults and also their families," said Cineplex president and chief executive Ellis Jacob. "Playdium is going to be a place where Canadian families will be able to play together and also enjoy and share a freshly made meal that is fun to eat."

The Rec Room is another new, but larger entertainment center concept from Cineplex. The first one, spanning more than 60,000 square feet, opened last year in South Edmonton, AB. | SEE STORY

The smaller Playdium will dedicate two-thirds of its space to games and attractions with the remainder offering food and beverage options. Cineplex plans to open 10 to 15 Playdium locations in the coming years. The first is planned for the Whitby Entertainment Centrum in Whitby, ON, located at 75 Consumers Dr. Jacob said construction for the 30,000-plus sq.ft. complex is scheduled to begin in early 2018 and should be finished by the end of the year.

Cineplex, whose main business is movie theater operations, owns and operates the original Playdium in Mississauga, ON. In addition to the Rec Room in South Edmonton, it operates Rec Rooms in the West Edmonton Mall and in Toronto. Other Rec Room complexes are planned for London, ON, Mississauga and Vancouver. The Deerfoot City store in Calgary, AB, is scheduled to open in late October. Cineplex also owns Player One Amusement Group, one the largest amusement machine operators and distributors in North America.
