Chuck E. Cheese's Recalls Over One Million Toys

IRVING, TX -- CEC Entertainment Inc., parent company of the Chuck E. Cheese's chain, said it is voluntarily recalling more than 1.1 million Chinese-made plastic rings and some 120,000 plastic eyeglasses following a Sept. 15 alert issued jointly by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission and by its Canadian counterpart, Health Canada.

The CPSC said if crushed or pulled apart, the toys' plastic casing could break into small pieces and possibly expose the batteries, posing an ingestion hazard to children. If ingested, the batteries may be damaging to a person's stomach, intestine, esophagus or nasal mucus membrane.

There have been two reported incidents involving the light-up rings in which a child either swallowed a battery or inserted a battery into his nostril, said the agency. There are no reported incidents involving the star glasses.

The rings were distributed as part of a promotion or during parent-teacher association conventions. The glasses were distributed as part of a birthday package and have the words "Chuck E. Cheese's" painted on the side.

The recalled toys were distributed at Chuck E Cheese's restaurants from April 2009 through June 2010 (light-up rings) and April 2010 through August 2010 (star glasses).

Government officials said consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell a recalled consumer product.

The CPSC said consumers should immediately take the toys away from children and return them to any Chuck E. Cheese's. In exchange for the rings, consumers may receive their choice of either a refund of $1 plus four Chuck E. Cheese's tokens or a "soccer promo-cup" plus four Chuck E. Cheese's tokens. In exchange for the star glasses, consumers may choose either a refund of $4.99 or a "flashing hands" prize product.
