CA Power Authority Targets $6M Annual Savings Through Large-Scale VendingMiser Installation

SAN DIEGO -- K. J. Kammerer & Associates, a nationwide energy conservation management-consulting firm here announced that it has been awarded a two-year contract with the Southern California Public Power Authority to help lower energy consumption by vending machines and save its customers an estimated $6 million annually in energy costs.

At the center of KJK&A's proposed energy-efficiency program is a substantial purchase of VendingMisers. These are key products in the EnergyMiser line developed by USA Technologies Inc. (Malvern, PA). The plug-and-play control reportedly reduces energy consumption by an average of 46%, using an intelligent power management system triggered by an infrared proximity sensor that applies full power to vending machines only when someone is in their vicinity.

The cost of the VendingMisers, and the administration of the SCPPA program, is being funded through a surcharge collected by the utilities from their customers and devoted to energy-efficiency initiatives. SCPPA includes 12 municipal utilities serving the cities of Anaheim, Azusa, Banning, Burbank, Cerritos, Colton, Glendale, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Riverside and Vernon, as well as the Imperial Irrigation District (Imperial, CA). SCPPA members deliver electricity to approximately two million customers over an area of 7,000 square miles.

KJK&A expects SCPPA customers to save more than 75 million kilowatt-hours of energy annually by using EnergyMisers, resulting in annual reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 3.9 million tons.

"Our goal is to lead by example and highlight how smart energy conservation technology can make a big difference in reducing energy consumption and cost, as well as lower C02 emissions," said David Walden, SCPPA energy systems manager. "We estimate that potential savings for customers will exceed $6 million in energy costs annually."

KJK&A officials said they will reach out to every vending operator in southern California and offer to install the EnergyMisers, or to provide the devices free of charge to those operating firms or utilities that wish to install them on their own. The utility companies will also help locate vending machines in the field that are VendingMiser candidates by promoting the program to their customers.

"When I go in to a large school or company seeking to lower its energy consumption, the first thing they ask is: 'Why haven't we done this yet?' The second question is: 'Why hasn't my vendor done this yet?'" said KJK&A president Kurt J. Kammerer. "Vending operators are beginning to realize that their customers want to be 'green' and cut their energy costs and they are increasingly turning to the VendingMiser as a solution."

KJK&A has executed similar large-scale deployments of VendingMisers for Southern California Edison, one of the largest utilities in the nation. These deployments include the County of Los Angeles, Ventura County, the City of Palm Desert, CA, and nearly every machine in 40 community colleges throughout southern California for another utility.

Kammerer said his consulting firm is currently in discussions with several local governments and energy utilities nationwide to develop similar programs that he says will not only help them reduce their energy consumption and costs, but also create new employment opportunities.

"Nearly all vending machines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and the cost to power them all in the U.S. is estimated at more than $1.5 billion," said Kammerer. "Most schools, cities and businesses that 'host' vending machines do not realize the costs of operating them, and many are now taking advantage of the VendingMiser's proven technology to help reduce their energy costs."
