GLEN ELLYN, IL -- Qualifying tournaments for the sixth annual Big Buck World Championship begin on Sept. 8. The finals will take place in Chicago, where more than $50,000 in prize money will be up for grabs.

The qualifying tournament that kicks off in early September takes place in bars and other coin-op locations through Oct. 13. Participating machines, connected to the Internet, will find the 64 best players from round the globe who will be invited to Chicago for the two-day championship weekend. The finals will take place in early November.

Last year's virtual shootout made history in New York City in lower Manhattan on Nov. 9 and 10 -- only a few days after the area's power was returned following Superstorm Sandy. Chris Fream, 29, of Minneapolis won the match, taking home Pappy's Jug, the Big Buck trophy, and $15,000. | SEE STORY

This year's extravaganza will again host the Big Buck Ladies Tournament, with a top prize of $5,000; ladies' qualifiers start on Sept. 8, too. Sara Erlandson of Beldenville, WI, was the winner of last year's second-annual Ladies Tournament.

"The sixth annual Big Buck World Championship and Ladies Tourney will be coming home to Chicago with an increased prize pool and, if you can imagine, an even bigger, more robust event to include more activities for friends and fans that are not competing," said Play Mechanix's Dave Snipes, who manages the event. "If you've never been to the World Championship there's no better time to start. If you're a repeat guest, prepare to be blown away."

During this year's qualification period for men, there will be five different tournaments in which players compete. Each will feature a different animal, and they are open for competition throughout the five weeks; players must participate in each one to appear on the main leaderboard. And a "two-trek tournament" must be concluded for each animal. More information on qualifying is available here.

Big Buck Hunter is an arcade videogame that was created by Play Mechanix and published by Raw Thrills. The first game was released in 2000. The latest, Big Buck HD, combines elements from two popular versions, Big Buck Hunter Pro and Big Buck Safari, and renders the amalgamation in high-definition. It hit the streets in 2012.
