TUKWILA, WA -- Avanti Markets is introducing two checkout terminals and two food safety products designed to increase installation options for its microomarket system.

The new Executive Kiosk is a streamlined self-checkout terminal designed to increase customer convenience in high-volume locations by offering multiple checkout stations and to extend the micromarket concept to "borderline" sites by lowering the acquisition cost. It costs about half as much as the full-size model, thus permitting profitable micromarket operation in accounts with as few as 75 employees.

Among the cost- and size-reducing features of the Executive Kiosk are the absence of a receipt printer and a bill validator. During checkout, the customer can respond to a prompt that offers to mail the receipt. Payment can be made with the patron's Market Card or major credit or debit card.

Also new is a countertop version of the fully featured Avanti kiosk, designed for use in installations where a service bar or counter already is present. Its functionality is the same as the freestanding model's.

Avanti also is offering two methods for insuring the safety of perishable products in refrigerated reach-in display cabinets. The turnkey solution is the Royal Vision Cooler RVCH-027, which is made by Royal Vendors and comes equipped with a health switch, similar to those on refrigerated food vending machines. This monitors the temperature inside the cabinet, and locks the door to prevent access if that temperature rises above a preset value. This prevents access to potentially spoiled food if the location's power shuts down over a weekend, but comes back on before the location reopens on Monday.

Operators who now have conventional refrigerated reach-in display cases can retrofit them with the FoodGard TTL-100 from ESC Co. (Randolph, MA). Designed for attachment to existing coolers and freezers, FoodGard is self-contained and battery operated; it needs no external power, but can accommodate a remote power supply with backup. Engineered to work with single- or double-door coolers and freezers, FoodGard can be installed in the field. The kit includes the controller (with door blocker) and sensors for internal temperature and door position. A communication option also is available.

Avanti Markets offers a variety of energy-efficient coolers, fixtures and comprehensive video security to support the kiosks. Its software is engineered to enable quick and easy transactions by patrons while providing the operator with an easy-to-used Web-based inventory management system. The operator interface has been designed to permit inputting new product information and updating merchandise within minutes.
