SEATTLE -- A strategic partnership between Apriva (Scottsdale, AZ) and CardSmith (Doylestown, PA) was announced at the National Association of Campus Card Users conference here in late April. Apriva is a provider of end-to-end wireless transaction and secure information solutions; CardSmith offers Cloud-based campus card payment technology.

According to the principals, this strategic relationship will enable institutions to deploy wireless vending and mobile cashless payment acceptance around their campuses without the cost, maintenance requirements and security concerns associated with traditional wire-line networks. The combined offering will support not only Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover credit card transactions, but also campus ID cards.

System integration is underway, and the companies expect to roll out the first wave of joint wireless payment solutions in the second half of 2012.

"Our work with CardSmith will enable campus card users to conveniently purchase goods and services at more locations on and around campus, including cashless vending machines and locations with mobile or outdoor requirements," said Apriva vice-president James Lawrence. "In addition, our joint solution will be ideal for sporting events, taxi and bus applications, and fundraising activities.

"Through this combined offering, students and other cardholders will have much more flexibility for using their campus cards to make purchases, while merchants and institutions will have a cost-effective vehicle to tap into the evolving mobile commerce ecosystem," Lawrence added.

Taran Lent, vice-president and cofounder of CardSmith, observed that the company expects that its joint efforts with Apriva "will benefit our many clients who are looking to integrate mobility into their campus card programs."
