COLOGNE, Germany -- Germany’s Anuga, the world’s leading trade show for the retail, foodservice and catering markets, will open at the historic Fairgrounds here on Oct. 5 and run through Oct. 9. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the event, which began in Stuttgart a century ago and has been held in Cologne since 1951.

Anuga --0 the name is a contraction of “Allgemeine Nahrungs- und Genussmittel-Ausstellung” (general food and beverage show) -- has evolved into an international exposition described as “10 trade shows under one roof.” Exhibits are organized in 10 categories: Bread and Bakery, Chilled and Fresh Food, Culinary Concepts, Dairy, Drinks, Fine Food, Frozen Food, Meat, Hot Beverages and Organic.

This year, for the first time, Anuga will offer opportunities for start-up companies to showcase their wares in special pavilions located in each of the show halls. Also new for 2019 is the Boulevard of Inspiration, which will spotlight new products and house the Anuga Trend Zone, a program stage on which experts from international market research organizations Innova Market Insights and Euromonitor will present analyses of developments in the food and beverage industry.

In addition to spotlighting current trends, the 100th Anuga will consider future developments. This focus on the future will include exploring technologies to help in feeding the growing population. Sustainability, climate change and the role of plant-based protein will be addressed through educational programming organized under a new expo platform titled Anuga Horizon 2050.
