INDIANAPOLIS -- The AMOA--National Dart Association held its first two of three regional soft-tip dart tournaments in Madison, WI, from Dec. 6 to 8, and in Phoenix, AZ, from Dec. 13 to 15. Seventeen NDA operators sent 196 players to the Madison tournament and seven operators sent 133 players to Phoenix, all competing for $15,000 in prize money at each event.

The NDA Regional Tournaments generated "enthusiasm about the extra fun and affordable opportunities" among players and operators, the NDA said.

NDA reported that operators participating in the Madison and Phoenix tournaments purchased 253 and 207 event entry certificates, respectively. Each competition featured Open Singles Combo, Doubles Cricket, Doubles '01 and Mixed Triples Combo, which required varying levels of play based on skill ratings. Prizes were awarded in each event level, providing a fair and competitive environment for all skill sets, NDA said.

"Through the creation of these regional tournaments, we wanted to give players another opportunity to compete and get the most out of their NDA-sanctioned status at a local level," said NDA president Judy Mehle, BMW Billiards (Loveland, CO). "We are overwhelmed by the positive reaction to the two tournaments so far, and hope to have just as great an experience at the final tournament in Florida." This will be held in Kissimmee, FL, from Feb. 14 to 16. Regional tournament participants must be NDA-sanctioned players, and are required to have played a minimum of 48 league games within the qualifying period.

NDA's Team Dart international tournament will be held from April 25 to May 3 at Bally's Las Vegas. Mehle observed that regional tournaments have the added benefit providing additional game practice, and offer players the opportunity to win entries to the annual international tournament.

To this end, NDA offers a variety of programs, materials and supplies to assist its members to increase the profitability of their dart operations.

NDA and its Team Dart event is sponsored by the Amusement and Music Operators Association, Arachnid Inc., Cyberdine d.o.o., Gaelco Darts S.L., Medalist Corp., NSM-Löwen Entertainment and Shelti/Gold Standard Games.
