American Vending Sales ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL -- Two prominent Midwest distributors are combining forces with the acquisition of Lieberman Cos.' distribution assets by American Vending Sales Inc. AVS will maintain operations in Lieberman's Bloomington, MN, headquarters. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Longtime Lieberman executives Kurk Johnson and Linda Winstead will continue to head up sales in vending and amusements, respectively, in the Minnesota market.

"We were looking for ways to expand our footprint in distribution and the Lieberman business fits in nicely with ours," said AVS president Vince Gumma. "They have unique expertise in family entertainment center design and micromarkets -- areas which we have identified for growth."

Lieberman president Hal Lieberman added, "I have known Vince for a long time and when we were looking to divest our distribution arm to focus on ATMs, the amusement route and Elsie's gaming café businesses, in my mind he was the ideal buyer."

Lieberman is a large ATM independent service organization, owns the American Amusement Arcades route, and, for the past year and a half, has operated gaming café locations in Illinois.

Gumma said it should be business as usual for Lieberman customers. In addition to Johnson and Winstead, AVS is bringing the Lieberman technical and parts staff onboard.

"Our goal is a seamless transition," Gumma said. "The companies share a similar philosophy in the way they treat employees and customers and our goal is to maintain the level of service that Lieberman has been known for."

The Lieberman organization was founded in 1907 by Samuel Lieberman as an amusement machine route operation. It diversified into coin machine distribution in the 1940s. American Vending Sales was founded in Chicago in 1971 by Frank Gumma Sr., Vince's father.

AVS's founder, who celebrates his 60th anniversary in the vending industry this year, was recently profiled by Vending Times. | SEE STORY
