MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- More than 1,000 industry members turned out for the 64th consecutive presentation of the Atlantic Coast Exposition in Myrtle Beach, SC. Themed "Kick Up Your Spurs At ACE," the event drew attendance from 32 states and Canada for three days of business and pleasure.

ACE 2017 took place on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-14. On the Thursday before the formal opening of the show, the North Carolina Vending Association and Virginia Automatic Merchandising Association held membership meetings, and the NCVA Political Action Committee held a Thursday evening reception.

As always, a highlight of the 2018 Atlantic Coast Exposition was the annual awards breakfast. The North Carolina Vending Association designated Jo Dee Jolley, Canteen Vending (Garner) as its vendor of the year, and Randy Quirk, Pepsi Bottling Ventures (Raleigh) as supplier of the year. The Virginia Automatic Merchandising Associatiion recognized Michael Frye, Southeastern Vending Services (Charlotte, NC) as Virginia supplier of the year.

Honored with the Barbara W. Short Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award is Tim Bailey, president of Canteen Vending's Mid-South Division (Charlotte, NC). The award commemorates a long record of exemplary service to the industry and the community by a member of one of the three state associations that sponsor the Atlantic Coast Exposition.

This year's keynote speaker was Staff Sergeant Keni Thomas, an airborne ranger who participated in the Battle of Mogadishu (Somalia) in October, 1993. This engagement was the subject of the novel and motion picture Black Hawk Down. Ssg. Thomas was awarded the Bronze Star with "V" device and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Upon his return to civilian life, Thomas has become a country music artist and motivational speaker.

In his ACE keynote address, Thomas described the importance of unit cohesion, the processes by which teamwork is learned and the conditions under which leadership skills develop. He urged the audience to remember that "you can’t do it alone."

The Atlantic Coast Exposition is organized annually by the North Carolina Vending Association, South Carolina Automatic Merchandising Association and Virginia. The original sponsors were the North Carolina Vending Association and South Carolina Automatic Merchandising Association.

The 2018 Atlantic Coast Exposition is scheduled for Oct. 11-13, again in the Embassy Suites Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach.

Tim Bailey, Canteen Vending (Charlotte, NC), receives Barbara Short memorial Lifetime Achievement Award from last year’s award-winner Wayne Seagraves (r.), formerly of Canteen (Charlotte, NC), and ACE planning committee chairman Mark Matthews (left), Atlantic Dominion Distributors (Virginia Beach, VA).
