vending machine, amusement game seizure TUCSON, AZ -- The seizure of prize-vending machines made headlines in Arizona last week. Phoenix-based CBS 5 News aired the story May 15 about the confiscation of 24 machines from 12 locations, mostly shopping malls, in Tucson and nearby Oro Valley.

The games -- seized by agents from the Arizona Department of Gaming, the Attorney General's office and other organizations -- appeared to be typical arcade equipment, from i-Cubes and Stackers to Barber Cut Lites. But what makes them illegal in Arizona are the high-value prizes and allegedly long-shot odds of winning.

Arizona Department of Gaming director Mark Brnovich told CBS 5 that the games featured number generators, making them impossible to win. Arizona law allows for amusement prizes, as long as the prizes do not exceed $35 in value. The confiscated machines not only held $100-$400+ electronic prizes, but also $1,000 gift cards.

In addition to the machines, $28,000 in cash and merchandise were seized. Brnovich told CBS 5 that the investigation is ongoing.
