AHMEDABAD, India -- Researchers in India have developed a cold relief chewing gum that is said to be more effective, and faster-acting, than pills, syrups or tablets. According to published reports, scientists from the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research created a Cetirizine-based gum that is said to offer relief from common colds within minutes of chewing.
Cetirizine, the active ingredient in such over-the-counter cold remedy brands as Zyrtec and Reactine, was sweetened for the new gum to make it more palatable. The flavoring, reported the researchers, lasts for approximately six to eight minutes of chewing. The results of the team's research, which were published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation
, indicated that 90% of the drug is released within 15 minutes of chewing.
The new cold remedy is just the latest in a growing list of research into functional gum products that include everything from teeth whiteners to a chewable delivery system for cannabis.
