CICERO, IL -- LBP Manufacturing reports that it has teamed up with Automatic Brewers & Coffee Devices (Conshohocken, PA), which will co-pack LBP UpShot single-cup capsules.
LBP launched its "eco-friendly" UpShot Solution last September. The filter, compatible with Keurig and other single-serve brewers, is made from 100% polypropylene and so can be recycled with No. 5 plastics. Its mesh filter allows customers to see and smell the coffee or tea when they open the outer packaging. The filters are paired with a flexible production model that allows roasters of all sizes to produce the single-serve capsules for office coffee and foodservice companies, retailers and brands.
ABCD, founded 65 years ago by industry pioneer K. Cyrus Melikian, has been producing biodegradable paper PodPerfect espresso and filter coffee pods for more than 30 years. Through its collaboration with LBP, the company has launched a "single cupper" co-packing process, which involves grinding whole coffee beans, packing the grinds in individual UpShot filters, and sealing the ensembles.
"ABCD has been providing the original single-serve format with its PodPerfect line, and has an extensive history and quality reputation in the coffee industry," said UpShot Solution sales vice-president Bill Rickert.
ABCD owner Bob Melikian added that LBP's Upshot Solution made it easy for his company to introduce a business model for smaller roasters with premium beans and blends.
"We focus not only on providing a final product to the customer's exact specifications," Melikian explained, "but also on the fact the UpShot filter brews a better cup of coffee and has a strong sustainable message, both things our customers desire and value."
ABCD reported that its UpShot co-packing process already has helped Saxbys Coffee Inc. (Broomall, PA), a gourmet coffee shop franchise, enter the single-serve market, and also is proving beneficial to several smaller boutique coffee roasters.
