Green Mountain Converts Nantucket Blend To Fair Trade Certified

WATERBURY, VT -- Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.'s Nantucket Blend is now 100% Fair Trade Certified. Prices and the available varieties and formats of the popular blend will remain the same.

The fair trade conversion will reportedly represent five million pounds of Fair Trade Certified coffee in 2013 and will deliver an estimated $1 million in fair trade social premiums to coffee farmers annually.

In 2000, the Waterbury, VT, roaster became one of the first in the United States to offer Fair Trade Certified coffees. The certification ensures farmers receive a fair price for their beans, resulting in a higher quality of life in coffee-farming communities.

Beans for Nantucket Blend are sourced from Fair Trade Certified coffee farms in Central America, South America, Africa and Indonesia. The coffee is described as a "complex blend that weaves winey, berry tones from East Africa, deep, full-bodied flavor from Indonesia, and zesty and bright flavors from the Americas.

Fair Trade Certified Nantucket Blend is currently available in 12-, 18-, 24- and 80-ct. K-Cup boxes, 16-ct. Vue pack boxes and12-oz. ground coffee bags. A Brew Over Ice variety, rolling out in May, will be the first Fair Trade Certified beverage in the chilled line.

"Converting our Nantucket Blend now allows us to bring more Green Mountain Coffee fair trade varieties to a larger consumer base than ever before," said Lindsey Bolger, Green Mountain's senior director of coffee for its specialty coffee business unit. "We're proud to be able to maintain the taste and quality of one of our most popular coffees while significantly changing the impact its existence will have around the world."
