KANSAS CITY, MO -- Children's Mercy Hospital here is banning the sale of sugary soft drinks in its vending machines, gift shops and cafeteria.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2013, drink choices will be limited to water, diet soda, juice, milk, coffee and tea. The exception will be the availability of Sprite for dehydrated children. Visitors, patients and employees will be allowed to bring their own soda into the hospital.

Children's Mercy said 42% of its patients last year and 62% of its employees were obese or overweight. Hospital officials acknowledged that banning soft drinks alone won't cure the problem, but said it's a start, since a child who drinks one can of soda a day consumes an extra 90,000 calories a year.
