WASHINGTON -- David Durnbaugh of SunDun Office Refreshments (Beltsville, MD) testified at a hearing conducted by the Washington, DC, City Council with regard to its Workplace Wellness Act of 2013. This measure would restrict the items permitted in vending machines in the city's buildings by mandating specific percentages of "healthy" products.
Durnbaugh, who is president of the Maryland-DC Vending Association, reported on the National Automatic Merchandising Association's longstanding commitment to informing the public about the nutritional content of vendible products, and its FitPick service
"Most of the industry is already meeting and/or exceeding the nutrition goals in the District of Columbia's city buildings, set forth by the proposed regulation," he told the City Council. "Since 2005, when NAMA created its FitPick and Balanced for Life programs, it has remained committed to providing the information consumers need to make the right snack and beverages choices."
Durnbaugh's company not only makes use of the NAMA FitPick program, but also developed its own "healthy" vending labeling program for its vending machines. SunDun operates 15 full-time beverage and snack vending routes in the greater Washington, DC, area.
NAMA, working in partnership with the Blind Vending Committee of DC and the MD-DE-DC Beverage Association, is paying close attention to the proposed regulation and any proposed amendments. As written, the regulation has the potential to reduce sales for blind vendors participating in the Randolph-Sheppard program.
Other presenters included representatives from the American Heart and Stroke Association; Advocates for Better Children's Diets; the Center for Science in the Public Interest; and the MD-DE-DC Beverage Association. Government witnesses included representatives from the District of Columbia's Department of Human Resources, Department of Health and Rehabilitation Services Administration.
