INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Indiana's smoking ban awaits only the governor's signature before it takes effect July 1, prohibiting smoking in most public spaces and workplaces. However, bars and taverns will be exempt.

Indiana's House of Representatives passed the bill 60-33 on March 8; the Senate approved it the following day in a 28-22 vote. Gov. Mitch Daniels, a Republican, has long favored a smoking ban.

Unlike most laws that prohibit smoking in public venues and workplaces in other states, Indiana's does not apply to bars or taverns that are not located in restaurants and do not employ anyone younger than 18.

Nonprofit private clubs -- fraternal and veterans organizations, for instance -- may permit smoking in separate rooms for patrons ages 18 and up, if an organization approves it.

More than half of all U.S. citizens now live in jurisdictions that have banned smoking in public places. According to a 2011 Gallup poll, 59% of Americans support smoking bans. | SEE STORY
