Pinball Games See Comeback In 'Pinbars,' Say Happy Location Owners

PORT TOWNSEND, WA -- Miranda Boyer and Paul Rice, the owners of Middletown Dreams here, say their location is a new type of venue called a "pinbar" that has recently become popular nationwide.

As its name suggests, a pinbar is a pinball arcade that also serves liquor for on-premise consumption. The owners said their pinbar -- located two doors down from a Washington State University extension -- is attracting locals year-round.

"There are a lot of these places popping up, so we wanted to open one here," Boyer advised local media.

Middletown Dreams features about 20 pinball machines as well as some air hockey tables. Rice said players enjoy pins and hockey tables because they are more "tactile" than videogames.

The site, open from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and from noon to 1 a.m. on weekends, recently launched its first "Double Elimination Hell in a Cell Air Hockey Tournament."

VT recently reported on another thriving new pinball specialty location called Pinball Jones (Ft. Collins, CO). Like Middletown Dreams, it is located near a college campus. | SEE STORY
