Illinois Video Lottery Opt-Outs Are Double The Number Previously Held

SPRINGFIELD, IL -- The Illinois Gaming Board has been reporting for months that 80 Illinois cities and towns have voted to opt out of the video lottery market. But a new government survey said the number is nearly twice as high. Some 151 municipalities and six counties have banned video gambling in all unincorporated areas, according to the Chicago Tribune.

In addition, the paper said approximately half of the state's communities and an undetermined number of counties "have statutes that forbid all legalized gambling" in unincorporated areas as a way of protecting ticket sales for the Illinois Lottery. It cited a report submitted to the IGB by attorneys for gaming machine manufacturers on March 27.

The Video Gaming Act was enacted in 2009 to create a market of up to 50,000 VLTs statewide. The Tribune's editors termed the VGA a "fiasco" and called for its repeal. Terminals are expected to go online in September.
