Smart Offers Economical HiTi Printer For Hollywood Photobooth

DES MOINES, IA -- Smart Industries said that it is offering a new printer for its Hollywood photobooth line. Manufactured by HiTi Digital Inc. of New Taipei City, Taiwan, the roll-fed printer can produce 1,000 4x6" glossy color prints between paper refills.

Smart reported that the cost per print is a surprisingly low 20¢, enabling the Hollywood booth to generate nearly twice the profit of a typical system with a per-print cost of 39¢ or higher.

HiTi is a well-regarded manufacturer of photo printers with a U.S. branch office in Walnut, CA. Its professional line is popular with event photographers and retail photofinishers.

The Des Moines manufacturer's photobooths previously used dye-sub printers made by Sony, which sold the division. The plant in which those printers were made was destroyed by the tsunami that hit Japan on March 11. Smart said media for photobooths using Sony printers are still available. Machines are still equipped with Sony cameras.

The Hollywood photobooth is a versatile apparatus that offers patrons a variety of printing options, including backgrounds, "outrageous characters" (users can composite their faces onto stored images) and classic 1/2/4 poses. An event mode allows operators to customize the photo print artwork for special occasions. A new rental mode adds the ability to print full color or traditional grayscale strip prints. The machine has an all-steel cabinet available in custom colors.

Smart, which began in 1963 as a traveling amusement operation, started developing and manufacturing equipment in 1985 -- initially crane games (the company pioneered the now-prevalent "joystick" control system), then sports and redemption games, self-merchandisers and photobooths.
