CANTON, MA -- Dunkin' Donuts stores will sell gluten-free cinnamon-sugar doughnuts and blueberry muffins in all U.S. stores by the end of the year.

"At Dunkin' Donuts, we recognize the importance of providing our guests with many options, including alternative choices for people with food and dietary restrictions," said Michelle King, spokeswoman for Dunkin' Brands. "We understand that sensitivities to food ingredients such as gluten are a serious concern for certain guests."

The gluten-free pastries will be packaged separately to avoid contamination from other foods that contain wheat flour. The doughnut chain tested the gluten-free breakfast pastries in locations in Massachusetts earlier this year.

Those with the autoimmune disorder celiac disease can't eat gluten, the protein in wheat, rye and barley. About one out of 133 people are believed to have the disease and 5% to 10% of the population reportedly suffer from gluten sensitivity in some form.
