Mercato 5000

WILMINGTON, MA -- Technivend Inc., based here, held a class for operators on May 3 to demonstrate the features of U-Select-It's latest Mercato 5000. The snack vender meets the revised requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. It joins other ADA-ready USI models, including the Alpine 5000 Elevator, a refrigerated, frozen or variable-temperature vending system. | SEE STORY

USI's ADA-compliant machines have illuminated product delivery boxes and appropriate heights for the entry positions of the keypad and payment system (48"). The new Mercato 5000 is available with "automatic delivery assist," an option that delivers product at 15" on an automated lift and enables single-hand product retrieval after opening the door by pushing a button.

The Technivend session not only reviewed USI's ADA-ready designs, it also examined the factory's optional iCart touchscreen interface. This 7" diagonal flat panel display replaces the physical keypad with one integrated into the screen and can communicate purchase information like nutritional facts.

The new ADA rules went into effect on March 15. Vending machine manufacturers, by the way, are not directly covered by the ADA; so they are not liable if their machines are noncompliant. However, ADA-covered facilities that offer vending services must ensure that those machine services are accessible to persons with disabilities. That means vending operators serving these sites are likely to be required by clients to ensure their services are accessible. | SEE STORY

Bill Cioni established Technivend in 1990 as an independent vending service company, concentrating on onsite machine repairs, refrigeration service, rebuilding, coin mechanism and validator repairs, and used machine sales. This background laid the groundwork for the company's expansion into equipment distribution. In addition to USI, Technivend represents Automated Merchandising Systems, Coinco, Conlux, Royal Vendors, Standard Change-Makers and SandenVendo, among other lines. Technivend can be reached at (978) 658-2415.

Des Moines, IA-based U-Select-It is a full-line manufacturer of vending equipment for snacks, fresh and frozen food, packaged cold drinks and coffee, including combination designs. It's a division of the Wittern Group, which has been serving the vending industry for more than 80 years.
