LAS VEGAS — For the eighth consecutive year, the AMOA International Expo will be co-located with Fun Expo to provide a comprehensive trade conference and exhibition of new equipment for the street route and fun center sectors of the amusements industry. New this year is a third co-located event, the Las Vegas Souvenir and Resort Gift Show. Badge holders from all three shows will enjoy free access to the other two.
The combined event takes place Wednesday through Friday, September 27 through 29 in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Board and committee meetings for both sponsoring associations, as well as the Fun Academy seminar program, will commence several days earlier.
The AMOA Expo is owned by the Amusement and Music Operators Association, while Fun Expo is owned primarily by the International Association for the Leisure and Entertainment Industry. AMOA and the American Amusement Machine Association are minority owners of Fun Expo under the umbrella organization, Leisure Entertainment Trade Shows.
New elements have been added to the expositions to increase their value and appeal to operators and other potential attendees. Recognizing that operators appreciate input from their peers more than other sources, AMOA is hosting a special seminar program called “Trade Tips From the School of Experience: Coin-Op Vets Share Stories On Survival, Success, Street Smarts and Savvy Salesmanship.”
This session occurs Friday, September 29 from to , and features a panel of professional operators, each of whom has more than 25 years’ experience in the industry. AMOA promises that during the event, veterans will discuss some of the lessons learned during their careers, forecast future directions for the industry and share entertaining anecdotes.
Many traditional show elements will again be present at this year’s AMOA expo; these include: a free seminar program (details below); an opening reception and poolside party at Bally’s Hotel; daily raffles and new equipment giveaways; discounted “Show Specials” pricing offered to attendees only; and a fundraising golf tournament with proceeds going to the Coin-Op Cares fund for relief of Hurricane Katrina.
New to this year’s Fun Expo will be a rapid-fire networking session called “The 8-Minute Match.” The format of this session was inspired by the so-called “speed dating” phenomenon, pairing operators and exhibitors in a succession of brief face-to-face meetings.
Other new happenings include periodic balloon drops, where lucky balloon-catchers can win door prizes, and a “class reunion” of graduates of the Fun Academy’s “Rookies and Newcomers” programs over the last five years. IALEI is offering all Fun Expo attendees free admission to an educational session on safety topics, entitled “Center Closes Due To Safety Issues: Could This Be You?”
Fun Expo will debut a new section on the exhibit floor called the Party Idea Center, where showgoers will be able to see the latest trends in party themes and have an opportunity to speak one-on-one with promotional and party experts. In this zone, attendees may also experience “mini” party sessions themselves.
Traditionally, an extensive, multi-track seminar program called Fun Academy has been the core of Fun Expo. The program returns this year, offering one series of seminars designed for industry newcomers and others for intermediate and advanced operators and owners of family entertainment centers.
For many participants, the most important reason to visit the AMOA International Expo is to inspect new equipment. Dozens of new and updated machines will be displayed by over 200 exhibitors, including new models and titles of pool and other table games, jukeboxes, countertops, redemption games, sports games, deluxe and upright video games, pinball games, novelties and more. A full spectrum of redemption prize merchandise, as well as assorted parts and services, will round out the exhibits on the AMOA side of the hall.
Fun Expo exhibits will include food and beverage products and services, inflatables, laser tag, rides, mini-golf equipment and supplies, party supplies, redemption systems and supplies, design and construction services, facility products and services, computer hardware and software, play structures and more.
Both associations will hold general membership meetings featuring committee reports, awards for outstanding performance in various categories from product innovation to FEC marketing and highly regarded motivational speakers (see separate story).
