Spider-Man Extends Stern’s Movie-Based Pinball Lineup

Marcus Webb

MELROSE PARK, IL -- Stern Pinball Inc. released its new Spider-Man flipper game in May as the film "Spider-Man 3" smashed box-office records, bringing in $148 million in its first three days.

Designed by Steve Ritchie, Lyman Sheats and Stern's engineering staff, the new game combines thematic elements from all three Spider-Man films to provide fast-paced play that Stern said will please both operators and gameroom equipment collectors, who have driven pinball resale values up in recent years.

The game challenges players to defeat villains from all three movies, including the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman and Venom. Each villain, represented by a toy figurine on the playfield, is associated with a special skill shot that adds a challenging element to play. Successfully defeating the bad guys by accurately shooting targets and ramps enables Battle Royale mode, in which all four bad-guy targets, some of which are animated, are live simultaneously.

The game pays tribute to the villians' special personas by including details such as Doc Ock's magnet, which simulates a "Fusion Malfunction" by holding the ball, and by depicting the Green Goblin hovering on his signature glider over a range of Pumpkin Bomb targets. The playfield also features Venom's ramp and Sandman's whirlwind of targets. There are several multi-ball play opportunities, officials said.

Steve Ritchie said that Lyman Sheats created "a set of elegant yet simple rules that anyone can learn in a few plays" to ensure satisfying game experiences for both casual and dedicated players. With help from the film's art department, Kevin O'Connor created art for the back glass and playfield and Marc Schoenberg and Mark Galvez produced the cabinet artwork.

The music and sound package was composed and adapted by David Thiel. Detailed dot-matrix animations, created by Mark Galvez, feature scenes from all three movies. Each unit weighs 250 lbs. and measures 27 ins. wide by 55 ins. deep and stands 75.5 ins. tall.
