SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- Apriva has announced that it is undertaking a strategic initiative with Open Solutions (Vancouver, BC) to deploy EMV-compliant contactless credit and debit card acceptance technology for vending machines and other unattended equipment throughout Canada.
EMV is an international standard for the interoperability of integrated-circuit payment cards and payment terminals developed by Europay, Mastercard and Visa, and adopted by American Express and the Japan Credit Bureau. EMV-compliant payment solutions permit vending operators to obtain the substantial business advantages that result from offering a cashless payment option. The Apriva-Open Solutions system has been developed to provide those advantages while effectively satisfying Canadian regulatory requirements.
Based on Apriva's end-to-end cashless vending solution, Apriva Vend, the new system is expected to roll out across Canada later this year. Introduced in 2010, Apriva Vend enables operators to accept card-based payments at vending machines. It incorporates all the components of a cashless vending solution, from hardware and software through payment processing and cellular carrier services to reporting.
Open Solutions, a leading provider of banking system outsourcing to Canadian financial institutions, is a Direct Connector member of the Interac Association, a national payment network that allows Canadians to access their money through automated banking machines and point-of-sale terminals across Canada.
Rob Palin, general manager of Open Solutions' Payment Solutions Group observed that Canadian vending operators have been watching the advances in cashless vending in the United States and are eager to cash in on the reported higher sales and better margins. "This solution provides consumers with choices to pay at an unattended point of sale, and introduces a disruptive technology that will invigorate the Canadian vending market," he said.
Paul DeRosse, Apriva's vice-president of business development in Canada, predicted that the Apriva-Open Solutions collaboration "will help to jump-start cashless vending in Canada.
"This joint effort not only gives our companies a strong foothold in this important market, but also enables vending operators to provide secure service to their customers, and make more money along the way," he observed.
Founded in 1999, Apriva consists of two operating groups, Apriva Point of Sale (POS) and Apriva Information Security Systems (ISS). It provides fully managed, end-to-end security solutions incorporating hardware, software, network infrastructure and management tools.
