Beneo, Deo Fragrance Candy

TIENEN, Belgium -- Beneo, a supplier of flavoring and food supplements using natural ingredients, is looking to market its sugar-free fragrance-transmitting confections in North America. The unique candy concept, billed as a "functional confectionery," promotes a scent that exudes from the consumer's skin after consumption. In effect, the product is a perfume you eat.

So far the company has signed on Alpi, a confectionery company based in Bulgaria, to create a candy called Deo that has consumers literally smelling like roses.

The way the candy (or nutricosmetic) works is through Beneo's proprietary Isomalt compound, which includes the natural ingredient geraniol (an acrylic monoterpene-alcohol found in in roses and other plants), along with lavender and vanilla. A natural antioxidant, Isomalt leaves the body through the skin's pores after consumption, exuding a naturally sweet smell that can last for hours. Company officials explained that the effect is not unlike the way garlic odor is released through the skin's pores.

"We are delighted to have realized one of our first innovative candy ideas with Alpi," said Bendeo's Wim Dries. "Our continued hard work together shows that, particularly in the field of boiled sweets, new ideas do come to fruition and allow everyone to come up smelling of roses -- literally."

The idea for perfumed sweets was first conceived in Japan, where experts confirmed that fragrance was released through the skin as a result of the consumption of geraniol.
