BROOKLYN, NY -- The family of a Brooklyn man who had a fatal heart attack after drinking a can of Red Bull has filed a wrongful death suit against the energy drink maker.

In 2011, Cory Terry, a 33-year-old father, reportedly drank Red Bull before he collapsed and died while playing basketball. His family claims that he had no diagnosed illness, lived an active lifestyle and was a nonsmoker.

The lawsuit, filed on Oct. 28, charges that the energy drink contains "extra stimulants that make it different than a cup of coffee," and that those additives "are more dangerous than what Red Bull lets on."

The lawsuit cites nine fatalities worldwide allegedly related to consuming Red Bull. The FDA has said that energy drinks have been linked to 18 deaths and 13,000 hospital visits, according to a 2009 study.

A Red Bull spokesperson said the company has sold 35 billion cans in 165 countries "because health authorities across the world have concluded that Red Bull Energy Drink is safe to consume."
