CHICAGO -- A City Council committee hearing earlier this month here declined to vote on a proposal to ban the sale of energy drinks in the Windy City.

City council member Ed Burke's proposed citywide ban of the highly caffeinated beverages led only to an agreement for further discussion.

Burke's first-in-the-nation plan, which would apply to both adults and minors, would levy fines starting at $100 on anyone who sells or distributes energy drinks with at least 180mg. of caffeine that also include taurine or guarana.

"Researchers found that these energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine and warned of dangerous, even life-threatening, effects on blood pressure, heart rate and brain function," the proposed ordinance says.

The council's Committee on Health and Environmental Protection is considering the measure.

Separately, a Cleveland, OH, lawmaker has introduced an energy drink ban, limited to minors. | SEE STORY
