LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has agreed to freeze its current health permit fee for cold food and coffee machines following industry opposition to a proposal that would have more than quadrupled the levy.
The health department had proposed raising the $62 per-machine charge to $275. A group of vending companies that operate in Los Angeles County met recently met with the director of the agency's environmental health division and his staff to explain the impact the fee increase would have on their businesses.
The National Automatic Merchandising Association reported that the health department agreed to freeze the fee at the current rate and work with the vendors on a program that will accomplish its goals to protect the public and, at the same time, not impose an undue burden on vending operators.
