OAKVILLE, ON, Canada -- New from Reunion Island Coffee is Firefly, a Rainforest Alliance single-origin coffee decaffeinated by the Swiss water process.
According to Reunion Island, decaffeinated products have been "the long-neglected ugly ducklings of the specialty coffee world." The company's director of coffee development, Adam Pesce, set out to rectify this situation.
"The Firefly Project was all about changing the preconceived notions about decaf," he explained.
Pesce began by looking for a high-quality single-origin coffee, and found one available from a progressive Rainforest Alliance-certified producing group in Brazil's Minas Gerais state. Pesce chose a coffee with sufficient character to maintain its exceptional taste and aroma throughout the decaffeination process.
Reunion Island's objective was to create a sustainable decaffeinated coffee without compromising taste. For that reason, it chose the patented Swiss water process to remove the caffeine without the use of chemical catalysts. "The result is a rich, aromatic coffee that offers decaf drinkers a deliciously satisfying coffee experience," Pesce said.
Firefly is roasted to a medium-dark color, to accentuate its buttery body and caramelized sugar flavors. "With its dark chocolate notes and clean finish, this decaffeinated coffee is ideal for traditional drip and espresso brewing," Reunion Island reported.
Rainforest Alliance Swiss Water Process Firefly is available now in 12-oz. (340g.) and 2.2-lb. (1kg.) whole-bean packages.
