Outrun Car

IRVINE, CA -- A scientist at the University of California here has been turned Sega's 1985 hit videogame driver into a real automobile.

Team leader Garnet Hertz said the "OutRun" project is intended to contribute to the development of gaming therapy systems for quadriplegics and other disabled persons. Gizmag, a newsletter focused on new technology, described the result as "a kind of combination electric golf cart and arcade-style videogame console."

Two forward-looking video cameras scan the street ahead as custom software translates the data into an augmented reality display that shows the real-life road on the screen in front of the driver, depicted in terms of graphics in the style of Sega's original OutRun game.

A video of the arcade game-inspired vehicle in motion is available at Gizmag. | SEE STORY
