BOULDER, CO -- City officials here said they will eliminate "unhealthy" snacks from vending machines at city facilities. The move is part of the national Let's Move! anti-obesity campaign spearheaded by first lady Michelle Obama.
By early 2012, city employees and visitors to city facilities will be confronted by items like granola, protein bars and baked chips in place of traditional candy and cookies at the vending machine. Serving as the basis for the new restrictions are Boulder Valley School District's guidelines for vending machines, which call for eliminating sugary and high-fat snacks that allegedly contain little nutritional value.
Guidelines for the city's beverage venders however, will be more lenient than those followed by schools. Soda will remain on the menu, and water, juice and sports drinks -- already available in many venders -- will be available as options alongside them.
The city's action plan calls for providing public education about making healthy choices, supporting physical activities for the community and promoting the availability of supposedly healthy foods.
