BRUSSELS, Belgium -- The European Vending Association has published a position paper that sets forth the requirements for increased use of contactless payment systems in vending machines. The paper was drafted by EVA's Cashless Committee, chaired by Jürgen Göbel of Hypercom.

The paper is directed primarily at credit card and banking institutions seeking opportunities to develop their businesses in the vending industry. EVA explained that, by offering a comprehensive analysis of the industry's needs, the association "hopes to break the deadlock with banks on transaction costs and see an increase in the number of contactless devices installed in vending machines."

Topics covered in the EVA position paper include vending's requirements for "credit first," speed, horizontal compatibility, communication, feedback and certification, as well as industry concerns about technology and pricing.

The EVA Cashless Committee also drafted the third version of its Cashless Vending Standard in 2009. The CVS has established technical guidelines for the design and implementation of cashless payment devices in vending machines.

The association noted that the recently published EVA/Datamonitor studies have indicated that coffee consumers at present more frequently choose vending machines over regular coffee shops, primarily because the vending transaction takes much less time. This trend suggests that enabling consumers to make vending machine purchases with contactless smart cards offering "tap-and-go" ease and speed will meet the market's demand and boost sales.

EVA Welcomes Spain's Vendin As Latest Supplier Member Firm

The European Vending Association has announced that Vendin, an international supplier of soluble products for hot beverage vending, has joined the association. The company was established in 1992 by a team of industry veterans with extensive prior knowledge of vending. It always has taken an international approach, and opened a factory in São Paulo, Brazil in 1998. It also maintains European facilities in Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.

EVA director-general Catherine Piana observed, "Vendin has both high-quality products and an incentive for international distribution. The EVA feels privileged that Vendin has chosen its association as a hub to further expand its activity and assure its place in the European vending market."

The European Vending Association represents the entire vending industry, including not only operators, ingredient suppliers and manufacturers of machines, accessories and components, but also national trade associations.
