Eu’Vend 2007 Wraps Up In Cologne; Breaks Attendance, Exhibit Records

COLOGNE, Germany — Some 5,400 visitors from 62 countries attended Eu’Vend 2007 here, an increase of nearly 30% over the traffic at the 2005 event. Showgoers had the opportunity to learn about the latest in products and services for vending, displayed at 230 exhibits – also a record, up 13% from 2005. Held in alternate years, Eu’Vend is sponsored by the German vending association BDV and administered by Koelnmesse, the Cologne trade fair management company.

Eu’Vend 2007 featured a number of initiatives intended to highlight the increasingly central role of vending in modern society. An architectural competition, Public Vending, challenged architects and urban planners to create new approaches to integrating vending machines into public spaces. The industry also presented its first Vending Star awards for innovation at the show.

Winning the architecture competition was a model submitted by Trint + Kreuder d.n.a. (Cologne); other winners included s.i.c. GmbH, which placed second; Arne Erling from Bochum, in third place; and a model by the Lüderwaldt und Verhoff architecture office, which received honorable mention. The competition was organized jointly by Koelnmesse and BDV, in cooperation with the Architects Association of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The first-place Vending Star award winner is Jakob Gerhardt Automatische Verkaufsanlagen GmbH (Nürtingen, Germany) for its CTG (Coffee To Go) vender. It not only prepares a wide range of coffee-based specialty hot beverages, but applies lids to the cups before delivering them.

Other finalists included the “Brand on Fire” marketing program, based on a rotating advertising display unit for vending machines; a sealable-tube cassette from Coges S.p.A.; and Hipp GmbH’s sugar-free organic fruit and organic fruit and yogurt products in jars.

Also among the competitors were Microtronic’s Micropay universal payment and billing medium (see VT, August); a new coffee vending machine solution for travel coaches from Nestlé FoodServices; and a management system for controlling the issue of tools, developed by Siegfried Roesler GmbH.

SandenVendo/WaterWerks made the finalists’ roster for its “post-pack” vending machine, which fills a resealable pouch and delivers it to the customer. Satro GmbH was recognized for its trendy Chai beverage from China.

Rounding out the top 12 are SuKulTur, publisher of the Schöner Lesen series – the title might be rendered  “beautiful harvest” – of short, youth-oriented books that sell for e1 through candy vending machines; Servomat Steigler, developer of Servomood light sheets for atmospheric illumination of vending break areas; and Sielaff Automatenbau, creator of the Barista Uno self-service coffee machine.

A highlight of the educational program was the Visions of Vending symposium, which attracted 120 international participants to explore best-practice examples of new approaches to vending machine operation, outdoor and other public vending, and sales solutions for operators.

Unusual machines exhibited at Eu’Vend 2007 included a vender dispensing muesli (a breakfast food based on rolled oats and fruit, especially popular in Germany and Switzerland) and adding milk or yogurt to the patron’s taste, at the push of a button. It’s designed for schools and the hospitality market. Also on display were machines vending everything from umbrellas to fruit preparations developed by a producer of brand-name baby food.

Summarizing the show, BDV executive director Norbert Monssen said, “Those were three very good days.” Wolfgang Kranz, executive vice-president of Koelnmesse GmbH, added that Eu’Vend definitely has achieved the status of a top European event.

The next Eu’Vend will be held in Cologne in 2009, from Thursday, September 24 though Saturday, September 26.
