HICKORY, NC -- The North Carolina Vending Association reports that vending pioneer Paul S. Speagle, Sr., is dead at 95.
Speagle joined the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Hickory as a salesman in 1937. In 1945, he cofounded the Seven-Up Bottling Co. of Hickory (later Piedmont Bottling & Vending). A longtime supporter of NCVA, Speagle held many leadership posts with the association, including its presidency. He was honored as 1980 North Carolina Vendor of the Year (see VT, June 1980).
A U.S. Army veteran who served with the Military Police, Speagle was extensively involved in community and civic activities. He assisted the American Heart Association, United Way, Boy Scouts of America, North Carolina Lutheran Home and Lenoir-Rhyne University in their fundraising efforts. Speagle was a member of the Hickory Kiwanis Club and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Speagle is survived by two sons, Paul S. Speagle Jr. and John Speagle; daughter Virginia Lutz (Alexandria, VA); seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
