Star Food Enhances Meal Vending Options

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — VE South’s new Star Food division has developed a USDA-compliant reimbursable meal vending program that provides a point-of-sale interface compatible with the practices of most school systems.

School foodservice professionals can improve and expand their meal plans, as well as accommodating a larger proportion of the student population, by installing Necta Star Food reimbursable meal vending machines in strategic areas on campus. The food machine incorporates local-area networking features with wireless capabilities, facilitating placement in virtually any campus location where students congregate.

The refrigerated Star Food machine not only allows students healthier and more convenient choices for lunch, but for breakfast and after-school snacks as well.

According to vending veteran Joe Gilbert, vice-president and general manager of Star Food, the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service recognizes that vending machines can play an expanding role in implementing the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. “On a national average, only about 38% of the population of a high school can be served within the short time allotted for lunch, so schools are missing many of their students,” explained Gilbert.

“Students often can wait in line for up to 20 minutes to be served lunch, leaving them with a very short amount of time to eat,” he added. “The Star Food reimbursable meal machine is a solution to the problem.”

The Star Food machine can work as a shopper or in first-in, first-out mode. Its state-of-the-art temperature maintenance system distributess cold air through the central column to each sector, assuring uniform temperature. The refrigeration unit slides out from the front for easy maintenance.

Other features include automatic doors and direct-selection pushbuttons, an electronic price display and attractive rounded front and back-lit photographic panel.
