TORONTO -- A proposal by civic officials to ban soda from Toronto's vending machines was shot down by members of the city's government management committee on March 29.

The "healthy vending" guidelines sought to phase out everything but milk, soy, 100% juice and vegetable drinks from vending machines in city parks and recreational facilities by 2014.

The committee voted 3-2 to keep offering 50% healthy options in beverage machines. City council will have the final say next month.
