WINNIPEG -- A pair of wily Canadian teens hacked into an ATM of the Bank of Montreal after noting the machine's model and make, then downloading the service manual online.

According to local news reports, the teens accessed the ATM at their local grocery store and reprogrammed the unit to administrative mode after entering a default system code.

Fortunately for the bank, the teens were simply demonstrating a security flaw in the system. They changed the machine's welcome screen to read, "Go Away. This ATM Has Been Hacked." They then reported the flaw to the local Bank of Montreal branch.

The teens, who carried out the hack on their lunch hour at school, realized they were late for class when speaking with the local bank manager. The manager accommodated the pair by writing them a note on bank letterhead.

The episode, while amusing, highlights the need for beefed up security at ATMs.
