Eu’Vend Planners Put Final Touches On September ‘07 Show In Cologne

COLOGNE, Germany (August 2007) — Eu’Vend 2007, set for September 20 through 22 at the famous Cologne Fairground, is shaping up as the largest and best-attended to date, according to the show’s organizers. Some 230 exhibitors from more than 20 countries are expected to showcase their products and services at the fair, which is organized and administered by Koelnmesse (the Cologne Fairground operating authority) and sponsored by the German vending association BDV.

Once again, the event is themed “Visions of Vending.” In 2007, that slogan is being applied literally, and the trade show will be set up to offer visual perspectives of what can be done with today’s vending technology. Thus, exhibitors’ presentations and supporting activities will be incorporated into an overall “Vending City” concept. The impact of this unifying theme will be strengthened by the show’s 2007 venue: the Cologne Fairgrounds’ impressive new Hall 8, completed last year with a variety of state-of-the-art amenities for exhibitors and showgoers alike. Its spacious design and extensive utilities infrastructure offers a wide range of  possibilities for imaginative show designers.

This potential has been harnessed to design “Vending City,” which is organized around a central boulevard running through the hall. This boulevard serves as the show’s axis and, in conjunction with a “ring road” encircling the entire exhibit area, will define an environment in which elements from everyday city life are integrated with the displays.

Special areas will represent a variety of typical city scenes, all directly linked to the vending theme. And a Vending Cafe catering area for visitors is planned as a “quiet zone.”

Also new will be an interactive display titled “Where History is Written on the Wall.” It will transform the structure of an old city wall into a modern expanse depicting the history of vending machines. A timeline, revolving “stones,” actual vending machines and classic cars, along with headphones and special seating, will allow visitors to witness the evolution of vending equipment within a context deepened by authentic details from each period.

To reinforce the theme, Koelnmesse and BDV launched a “Vending Innovation” competition. Exhibits will be considered in four categories – technical equipment, concepts, products, and devices for optimizing the operation of vending machines. The winner will be selected by an independent panel of experts, and honored with the Vending Star. The best entries will be displayed in an Innovation Award area, and the winning entry will receive special recognition during the Vending Evening festivities on September 21.

DESIGN COMPETITION

The show also will display the results of  a competition for architects, organized by Koelnmesse and BDV with the assistance of the Architects’ Association of North Rhine-Westphalia (see VT, March). Titled “Public Vending: Innovation in Public Spaces,” the contest invited architects to submit entries demonstrating the harmonious integration of vending machines into the contemporary urban environment, and  illustrating appropriate ways to incorporate vending machines into today’s public spaces.

One of the goals of this initiative is to promote close cooperation between architects and urban planners, on the one hand, and vending equipment manufacturers, on the other, from the earliest stages of a project. The best entries will be on display in another show area titled “Exhibit on the Hoardings” (hoardings are the wooden slat fences that enclose vacant lots, always attractive supports for posters and outdoor advertising in general).

To help get the ball rolling, a new Workshop for Interior Designers and Suppliers of Shop-Fitting Solutions will be conducted on each day of the trade fair. This will explore the issue of incorporating vending machines into the contemporary environment with emphasis on public interior spaces.

Finally, an “Operator Bar” lounge will provide an interior space in which showgoers can take a break and enjoy snacks and drinks.

Above all, Eu’Vend 2007 will showcase the best in equipment, product and services for vending and related enterprises. This year’s show will boast an expanded range of products, comprising not only vending machines and payment systems, vendible food and non-food items, management information systems and services but also materials for fabricating, finishing and styling the equipment and vending areas.

And a new segment will make its debut at this year’s show: kiosk systems, ranging from information terminals through a wide range of self-service devices and including not only the equipment but the latest software for unattended point-of-sale operation and control. The emphasis will be on the essential commonality of function between merchandise vending machines and the ever-wider range of customer-actuated service and instrumental kiosks, dispensing everything from movie tickets and farecards through trade show visitor badges and exhibit-area directory and polling terminals to hotel room keycards and airline boarding passes.

The show’s organizers believe that showcasing these kiosks as an extension of the vending spectrum will attract new visitor target groups to Eu’Vend, including transport companies, a wide range of retailers, trade associations and professionals like physicians and tax consultants.

EXHIBITOR ROSTER

Among first-time exhibitors at this year’s Eu’Vend will be 3M, Deutsche Telekom, Freedom Shopping, Illycaffè, Intercookies (a UK-based international purveyor of baked goods, candy and snacks), Streetvending AG (developer of a cold-drink vending machine from which beverages may be purchased with a cellular telephone), Waeco (a leading German manufacturer of mobile refrigeration systems), and many more.

They will join a distinguished roster of international vending manufacturers, suppliers and service providers, including Azkoyen Comercial, Lorenz Bahlsen Snack-World, Barry Callebaut Germany, Coca-Cola Deutschland, Crane, Deutsche Wurlitzer, Kraft Foods, Lavazza, Mars, N&W Global Vending, National Rejectors, Nestlé Food Services, Saeco, SandenVendo, Servomat Steigler and Sielaff, to name just a few.

This year, Eu’Vend registrants will be able to use their admission tickets to travel free of charge on the local mass-transit network of the Rhine-Sieg Transport Authority, as well as the buses and streetcars of the Colgone Municipal Transport Authority.

Koelnmesse also has teamed up with the German railroad operating authority, Deutsche Bahn, to offer Eu’Vend exhibitors and visitors special prices for rail tickets to the exhibition center station, Koeln Messe/Deutz, from points throughout Germany. The discounts are available to showgoers who register online.
