MILFORD, IA -- An Iowa man lost his job and unemployment benefits for using a forklift to shake a hanging candy bar from a vending machine. According to local press reports citing state unemployment records, Robert McKevitt, 27, of Spirit Lake, IA, was working at Polaris Industries' warehouse in Milford when the alleged incident occurred.

McKevitt, who deposited $1 in a vending machine for a 90ยข Twix bar, became upset when it became snagged during the vend. After banging and rocking the machine in an unsuccessful bid to free the caught confection, he returned a short while later with a forklift. McKevitt then proceeded to lift and drop the machine to the floor at least half a dozen times.

Newspapers said three candy bars fell into the delivery bin, but McKevitt's good fortune didn't last for long. He was fired a few days later. In the ruling against McKevitt, the judge denied his claim for unemployment benefits on the grounds that he disregarded his employer's interests.
