LAS VEGAS -- The second annual Amusement Expo drew 1,522 buyers for the 2011 show, compared with 807 last year, a 47% increase, according to show manager Brian Glasgow.

Exhibitor numbers were up 26%, with 135 companies displaying goods and services, compared with 101 in 2011. The numbers of booths increased to 372 from 306, or 18%. The collocated National Bulk Vendors Association show had 21 exhibitors. | SEE NBVA SHOW REPORT

Overall attendance for Amusement Expo soared 49%, with 3,083 registered participants in 2011 compared with 1,894 last year.

The Amusement Expo, the embodiment of the long-running (and separate) coin-op trade shows sponsored by the Amusement and Music Operators Association and American Amusement Machine Association, ran from March 1 to March 3 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

A one-day reciprocal admission policy between Amusement Expo and the Pizza Expo, drew an additional 300 visitors, Glasgow reported.

The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions hosted a three-day FEC educational program in conjunction with the 2011 Amusement Expo. IAAPA chairman Bob Rippy, Jungle Rapids (Wilmington, NC), was on hand to kick off the program on Feb. 28.

IAAPA's FEC Summit, which used to be a part of Fun Expo, collocating with the coin-op shows, offered seminars on operational safety, retailing, online scheduling, guest service, new ADA regulations and gameroom operation, along with social media, new attractions, cashless operation and party tips. Kelly Bernish of Walt Disney World Parks & Resorts, David Katz of Bonita Marie International, Doug Stagner of Sea World, Tim Sorge of Swings-N-Things, Michael Getlan of Smiles Amusements and Dorothy Lewis of Maxx Fun were among the presenters.

The Amusement Expo held its own seminar program, planned by an educational committee consisting of AMOA and AAMA members. The program, free to registered showgoers, featured six sessions that attracted 415 participants.

BEST OF THE BEST
During Amusement Expo's opening ceremonies, AAMA presented its 2010 industry awards. AAMA presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to distribution pioneer Frank Gumma Sr. of American Vending Sales (Elk Grove Village, IL). The association's Distributor of the Year award was bestowed on Betson Enterprises, while Manufacturer of the Year honors went to TouchTunes Interactive Networks. Suzo-Happ was recognized as Supplier of the Year.

AMOA presented numerous awards during its membership breakfast on March 2. Among them were three AMOA Innovator Awards, which were presented to Apple Industries for its Pix Place photo kiosk, Coast To Coast Entertainment for the Stage 1 crane machine controller and TouchTunes for Virtuo, a new digital jukebox that was a major draw at the show.

The 2012 Amusement Expo will be held March 14-16, Wednesday through Friday, again at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Visit amusementexpo.org for updates.
