COLUMBIA, SC --(Posted April 29) After a nine-year legal battle, the state Supreme Court of South Carolina has vindicated Fred Collins of Collins Music (Greenville), a former president of the Amusement and Music Operators Association. According to the Associated Press, the high court today upheld a lower court's award of $15 million in damages in the case of Collins vs. International Gaming Technologies. Collins' original suit, filed in November of 1994 with a follow up complaint in 1998, charged that IGT failed to honor its contract giving him exclusive rights to distribute IGT products in the Palmetto State. Collins won the District Court jury trial in 2001 but IGT appealed the verdict and the state Supreme Court certified it for review three months later. Collins has long been known for his aggressive legal defense of contracts and seldom loses a case. The AP quoted attorneys for Collins saying the U.S. Supreme Court was unlikely to accept any IGT bid for a review at the federal level.
