Sega Puts Red-Label Advisory On "Virtua Cop 3"
SAN FRANCISCO-- (Posted June 3) Sega Amusements USA has decided to post a Red-label advisory symbol for "Lifelike Violence: Strong" on its new shooting video, "Virtua Cop 3." This is according to Kevin Williams of The Stinger Report. The game was previewed at the Amusement Showcase International last March with a Yellow-label advisory denoting "Lifelike Violence: Mild." Sega officials made the decision after Williams advised industry trade associations that competing manufacturers were questioning the original rating. Under the Coin-Operated Video Game Parental Advisory System (PAS), manufacturers assign ratings to their products following an internal review with reference to PAS guidelines. This is believed to be the first time that a manufacturer has changed its rating on one of its games. Sega officials told The Stinger Report that the company did not necessarily agree "Virtua Cop 3" warranted a Red-label warning, but that it would make the change in the spirit of good citizenship. "We will be taking steps to update our customers and their operators with Red-label decals and a Rating Advisory Bulletin detailing the application of these decals on the marquees of all 'Virtua Cop 3' standard and deluxe units," Sega advised TSR. "Additionally, we will be applying these decals to all future production of 'Virtua Cop 3' games." More information is available at http://www.thestingerreport.com.
