ALBANY, NY -- The New York State Automatic Vending Association will hold a lobby day on May 11 and a membership meeting on June 8.

NYSVA members, who include operators, distributors, manufacturers and suppliers, will meet on May 11 in Albany at the Legislative Office Building (at the corner of State and Swan Streets SE) to discuss industry concerns with their elected officials in the Assembly and Senate.

Leaders of New York's vending industry described last year's trip to the state capital as very successful. They said it helped to defeat former Gov. Dave Paterson's proposed bottle bill (see story) and made the case for maintaining the current sales tax exemption for products priced at 75¢ and under in vending machines (see story).

This year, the association is seeking support for a bill, sponsored by Sen. Tom Libous, which would raise the sales tax exemption to $1.50 -- about the cost of a vended 20-fl.oz. soda bottle. Libous sponsored a bill in 2000 that exempted food and beverage items sold in vending machines for 75¢ or less from state sales tax, to help the vending industry remain competitive with over-the-counter outlets.

On June 8, NYSAVA's board of directors and general membership meetings will take place at the Frito-Lay plant in Binghamton.

The meetings begin at noon and will be followed by a tour of the snack giant's manufacturing plant. The day wraps up with box seats at a Binghamton Mets baseball game and an all-you-can-eat barbecue. The registration fee is $50.

NYSAVA said members can obtain more information about meetings and events at nysava.org. For lobby day, operators will need to schedule meetings with their legislators.
