OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Sprint Nextel is offering an application for small businesses that operate vehicles. FleetSafer Mobile was developed by ZoomSafer Inc. to promote safe driving and compliance with local laws and federal regulations.
Networked with the vehicle's onboard diagnostic circuitry through a low-cost "trigger" plugged into the OBD-II port, the system deactivates selected functions on Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile smartphones when the vehicle is in motion. An "administrative portal" allows the fleet manager to configure and manage safe driving policies.
Using the phone's automatic vehicle location feature, the software launches when speed reaches 15 MPH, locking the keypad and screen so drivers cannot text or email while driving. Drivers can still take hands-free calls via a Bluetooth earbud or speaker, and make calls using voice commands when the vehicle is in motion. Once the vehicle stops, drivers can use a voice command to unlock the keyboard and screen.
Users can program text or email replies for auto-response to incoming messages when the car is in motion. A voice feature is planned, and it will allow users to create emails and texts vocally, and announce the receipt of priority messages. Availability with other phone types is in the works.
