CHICAGO -- The National Automatic Merchandising Association is calling on its members to join a grassroots campaign opposing implementation of a rule that would require all businesses to file a 1099 form ("information return") with the Internal Revenue Service whenever they pay a supplier or service provider more than $600 in the course of a year, starting in 2012.
This provision is included in Section 9006 of the recently enacted Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
"This is a dramatic increase in reporting from previous 1099 requirements," said NAMA senior vice-president of government affairs Ned Monroe.
He reported that a bipartisan group of elected officials in both houses of Congress is seeking to repeal the measure, and NAMA is a member of the coalition formed to support this important effort.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has prepared a form letter summarizing the key points that concerned parties can complete and submit to encourage their legislators to support the repeal effort as part of a "national sign-on letter." Instructions are provided for businesses, trade groups and other parties who will be affected if the requirement takes effect. It can be accessed here.
"We hope that our members will also join the coalition and sign the letter to Congress," Monroe said. "You may choose to add your state council group, or your individual company. The more that join, the more effective our letter."
