BRUSSELS, Belgium — The European Vending Association has announced that it will stage its 2008 Payment Systems Conference here on September 11 and 12. It’s set for the Sheraton Airport Hotel in this historic capital, and is designed to “update the industry on the world of payment today and tomorrow.”

Registration for the event opens at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, and a networking cocktail reception and buffet dinner are scheduled for 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The formal program gets underway at 9 a.m. on Friday, September 12, with an introduction by conference chairman Jeff Allsop, director of MEI UK International Ltd. (Reading, England), who will outline the objectives of the event. At 9:15 a.m., Dr. Alfred Kraxenberger of Giesecke & Devrient GmbH (Munich) is scheduled to explore the future of cash and cashless payment; a representative of the banking community in the European Community will explain banks’ strategies for cash and cashless transactions; and a consumer representative will offer the end-user’s view of the topic.

After a coffee break, the second session will lead off at 11 a.m. with a presentation by Markus Egger of Selecta (Zug, Switzerland), who will detail an operator’s experience with mobile and credit card payment in public locations. James McDonald of Barclay’s Bank (London) and a representative of Bunzl plc (also headquartered in London) will report on closed-site cashless payments in vending. Klaus Meyer-Steffens of NRI (Buxtehude, Germany), current chairman of the Coin Groups of EVA and the Worldwide Vending Association, will offer a report on the challenges presented by coins, and describe the work of EVA and WVA to overcome them. And Andrew Yellop of MEI will offer an overview of the issue of coin variability in a growing euro area.

Following a 3 p.m. coffee break, the final session will include a presentation on “Trends: tomorrow and beyond.” Stefano Bartoldo of Coges, a leading Italian manufacturer of payment systems, will make the case for mobile payment in vending. Omar Rifast of Visa Europe and a representative of MasterCard will offer insights into the plans developed by the major card issuers to replace cash. A representative of the National Automatic Merchandising Association (Chicago) will offer an operator’s experience with telemetry; and a speaker will outline the potential of biometric technology in automated payment systems.

The conference chairman will offer closing thoughts and conclusions from 4:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Information on registering for the conference may be had at the EVA website, vending-europe.eu.
