CHICAGO -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is seeking industry comments on new calorie-disclosure rules for vending. To facilitate these comments, the National Automatic Merchandising Association will hold a conference call on Wednesday, July 28 at 1:30 pm (EST), to help its members make their voices heard.

The rules FDA is currently drafting will require any operator of 20 or more vending machines to disclose nutrient content information for all food and beverages in the machines.

The vending association continues to call on the FDA to allow flexibility in the method of disclosure. Its suggestions include having a single menu with calorie counts for an entire bank of machines, and permitting options for posting calorie information that allows multiple products to be placed in the same vending coils or stacks.

NAMA is also asking that vending operators who produce fresh food for vending machines have the same technical allowances as chain restaurants. Additionally, it is seeking legal protection for minor and inadvertent mistakes in calorie disclosure, and sufficient time to implement any new regulations.

NAMA said it is preparing comments for the FDA, and is encouraging its members also to submit written comments.

To join the conference call, dial (800) 944-8766 and enter pass code 73701#.

To submit comments electronically, go to http://www.regulations.gov, choose "submit a comment" from the top task bar, enter docket No. FDA-2010-N-0298 in the keyword space and select "search."

Comments can also be submitted by mail to: The Division of Dockets Management, HFA-305, Food and Drug Administration, 5630 Fishers Lane, Room 1061, Rockville, MD 20852. Comments are due by Sept. 7, 2010.
