JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- Attorney General Chris Koster said his office has reached a settlement that obliges an Oklahoma man to refund the Missouri firefighters who were swindled when they purchased his beef jerky vending franchises.

James Adam Jenkins, owner of BK Premium Products, reportedly targeted firefighters in St. Louis and Springfield, MO, to whom he sold beef jerky vending franchises for $2,500. Jenkins promised the franchisees that 25% of the proceeds would go to one of two charities.

The settlement resolves allegations that Jenkins neither delivered the materials to operate the beef jerky franchise nor donated any of the $2,500 to charity.

Under the settlement, Jenkins must provide a full refund to any person who requests it. Refund requests must be made by July 30, and can be made to the Attorney General's office or to Jenkins.

In addition, Jenkins must make quarterly reports to the Attorney General's office that list total sales, donations and the charities receiving the donations. Jenkins is required to provide these reports through Dec. 31, 2013.

"I know that many Missourians have placed money in these types of canisters with full confidence that their donations were going to charitable organizations," Koster said. "It is contemptible that anyone would defraud others in the name of charity, and this office will aggressively go after those who do."
