BROOKLYN, NY -- A new company called Runa is breaking ground in the energy drinks category with a product made with leaves from the guayusa tree. Each can of Runa Clean Energy contains only carbonated water, guayusa, citric acid and natural flavors.
The natural brew has 120mg. of caffeine (50% more than many leading energy drinks) and 680mg. of polyphenol, an antioxidant. Guayusa contains no tannins, resulting in a smooth, naturally sweet flavor.
Runa Clean Energy drinks are available nationwide at a suggested retail price of $2.29 a can.
Guayusa is native to the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest and is one of three known caffeinated holly trees. Its leaves are dried and brewed like a tea for their stimulative effects.
